In Korean weather forecast terms, the word 꽃샘추위 /kkot saem chu wi/ literally translates into the winter’s jealousy of the flowers blooming. It is a metaphorical term for the lingering cold weather in the blooming season between winter and spring.

Ironically, this term seemed to reflect Korean political climate at the beginning of Spring 2017. After six months of painful yet peaceful candlelight protests by hundreds of thousands of Koreans over President Park Geun-hye’s political scandal, President Park was impeached and dismissed. On the day President Park’s resignation was decided and announced, the country was filled with blended cries and screams from both supporters and opponents of the President. March 9th will become another historical moment following the June 1987 Democracy Movement in Korea.

우리의 날씨용어 중 꽃샘추위라는 단어는 꽃을 피는 것을 시샘하는 듯한 겨울 끝자락의 추위가 끝날 듯 끝나지 않는다는 비유에서 비롯되었다.

아이러니하게도 꽃샘추위라는 단어는 2017년 봄을 애타게 기다리고 있는 한국의 정치기류를 말하고 있는 듯 했다. 수백만명의 시민들이 육개월이라는 시간을 힘겹게 그리고 평화롭게 시위했던 촛불집회는 대통령 탄핵으로 이어졌다. 탄핵소추안 인용이 결정되던 날, 한국은 희비가 섞인 울음과 함성으로 가득했다.1987 민주항쟁 이후로 역사적인 민주주의의 한 켠을 기록하게 될 3월 9일, 우리가 들었던 사람들의 함성은 우리에게 관계에 대한 많은 질문을 안겨준다.

누가 누구의 길을 막으려 했고 누가 그 자리를 뺏기지 않으려 했던 것일까? 떠난 사람은 누구이고, 남겨진 사람은 누구일까? 이 이야기에서 자연의 이치라는 것은 존재했던 것일까? 그리고, 겨울이라는 시간은 또 다시 오게 될까?
